“Tracing Architecture” podcast launches with discussion of passion inside and outside the profession

The Tracing Architecture podcast is an initiative of the AIA Arizona, the AIA Phoenix Metro, and the AIA10 exploring the layers of architecture as an industry, profession and art form.

Created and hosted by Jones Studio’s own Shawn Swisher, AIA, along with Matthew Tehan, AIA, of Smithgroup and James Wasala, AIA, of Merge Architectural Group, the premiere episode, “Passion: Within + Without Architecture,” launched online this week.

“We started this podcast as a way to connect to more AIA members, and specifically AIA10 members who tend to be short on time,” said Swisher. “We also wanted to find a way to explore topics in more depth than what can be afforded during in-person events – things that revolve around our work or lie beneath the surface of the industry that get discussed less than the work itself.”

The podcast officially launched on February 13 with a live recording of the first episode at the AIA Arizona office in downtown Phoenix.

Arizona architects Karin Santiago, AIA, of Lightvox Studio, Diane Jacobs, AIA, of Holly Street Studio, and Michael Kothke, AIA, of HK Associates spoke on what drives them as architects and as people, where that passion comes from, and how they continue to find inspiration in their work and daily lives.

“That desire to explore the different layers of our profession is how we developed the guiding theme of the podcast and the name,” said Swisher. “Tracing Architecture is a nod to the iterative process of our work and our position in society, the need to follow things through to the smallest parts in order to understand the whole, and that the spaces we create are the result of many factors seen and unseen.”
