2003 | Phoenix, AZ | Performing Arts Center | 43,000 sq ft | $7 million
When South Mountain Community College was investing in a new performing arts center, they understood it needed to be more than just a building; it had to be a beacon for the community. Jones Studio’s playful energy and ingenuity resulted in a design that exceeded the college’s aspirations. The SMCC Performing Arts Center is instantly recognizable and functionally proficient and the architecture emanates a friendly, familiar feeling to the community. Break-metal louvers dissipate heat and shade the wall surface, providing a tough shell to protect the interior sound chamber. At night the intermediate glazing pushes light through the louvers, offering a warm welcome of lantern light.
